NEW COURSE! The History of Astronomy
by Aaron Turner - Monday, 30 March 2015, 12:46 AM

I am very excited to announce that starting in August I will be running a new Astronomy course.  In addition to running the original Introduction to Astronomy course, I will be offering a new class reviewing the History of Astronomy.  Starting from prehistoric evidence of observations of the motions of the Sun and Moon, this course will trace the development of our understanding of the Universe through the early theories of the Greeks, then through the Copernican and Galilean revolutions of the Renaissance, Kepler, Newton, and the dawn of modern astronomy in the 18th-20th centuries.  We will carry through to the latest discoveries of th 21st century, and peer into what lies ahead.

Students for this class must be either 10 years or older, or have completed the Introduction to Astronomy course.  Classes will meet every other Wednesday at 7pm starting in mid-August, and running into spring, 2016.  Because the course is still being developed, the exact number of classes is not certain at this time, but will likely be between 15 and 20.  Observation time may be included on clear nights after class.  Cost for this course will be $160 per student, parents attending for free (and encouraged to attend).

Those of you with access to mailing lists and willing to post on my behalf may use the description above in those lists, and I thank you in advance.  If you are willing, please let me know and I will also send you the usual description of the Introduction course which will run during the same time period on the other Wednesdays.
